In the Keys

On Sunday afternoon we all took a roadtrip down to the Florida Keys.
Two nights in Lime Tree Bay Resort and then we going to move down to Key West for 2 nights.
Its so relaxing here – hammocks hanging from every palm tree. Canoes out in the dock for whenever you want.
We took a drive up and down a couple of miles today and spent some time at a teeny little beach.

We didn’t bring a laptop with, so I’m gonna keep this post short – we’ll be back in Boynton on Thursday or so, and will try do a catch up with more photos before we head up north for Cape Canaveral and Disney World and Universal Studios.

In the mean time, here is a sunset pic from last night!

Leaving JHB to 8 Oct 2010

We left JHB at 9pm on Tue 5 Oct.

The flight to Heathrow was about 11 hours and pretty uneventful. We had prebooked our seats, so we had a lot of legroom – very pleased about that!!

The food was pretty gross but the airhostesses were very friendly (a little older than what i’m used to!)

Landed in London at 6am (London time) raining, miserable, grey, rather typical ;) We only had a 2 hour wait for our connecting flight – which seemed like the perfect amount of time. We grabbed a drink and a snack at the Starbucks and took a slow walk to our boarding gates.

The 8 hour flight to Miami was pretty uneventful again. I slept a fair amount on both flights.

FINALLY we landed in Miami (1pm Florida time) – took FOREVER to get thru passport control!!!

I saw my sister the second we walked thru the doors… when she eventually saw us, she started waving the old SA flag around – haha!! (and a USA flag).

We (peter, me, my sister – Ingrid and her BF Fred) all piled into her little sports car and took the hours drive back to her place. We were pretty buggered.

We had lasagne and salad for dinner, and had a pretty early night.

On Thursday we rented a car so that we wouldn’t have to pile into the small car ;)

We did some sightseeing around the beaches and took a drive through the larney areas in Palm Beach.

Stopped off at The Norton Museum of Art as they were having a Van Gogh Self POrtrait Exhibition. Turned out it was only one self portrait.

It was a bit of a let down, but we had a good laugh at all sorts of stuff – ESPECIALLY this piece called “The Artist who Swallowed the World”:

Grabbed a bite for lunch at a sidewalk cafe type place.

Oooooh, we went shopping with Fred at the grocery store called Publix – Fred says he is the world’s slowest shopper – well… by the time he was done, we had only made it halfway through Publix!! haha. Such cool stuff :) and their fresh fish section is UH-MAY-ZING!! Fresh salmon steaks, scallops, prawns, and king size crab legs that are almost a metre long!!! WOW!!

Scheduled into our calendar for that night was “A special event dinner for Peter and Tanya” … Ingrid says to me to open a big trunk in her lounge… it is FILLED to the BRIM with presents!!!! For all the birthdays and christmasses she has missed over the past 11 years she’s been in the states!

So, Peter and I spent about an hour or so opening presents and oohing and aaahing at all the goodies :)
My “21st” present is a florida keyring with a key to her front door :D :D how cool is that!!? We also got a hammock, an ENORMOUS towel, fake tattoos, a bunch of Miami Dolphins stuff (caps, jacket, necklace etc etc). Was very very cool :D

Ingrid made delicious ribs for dinner and we sat around chatting for ages.

Friday morning was supposed to be an early start – but we were running a bit late ;)
We got to the Loxahatchee River for canoeing at about 10:30am, grabbed our canoes and set off down the picturesque river keeping an eye out for ‘gators, otters, turtles, birds etc. It was gorgeous!. We all kinda sucked at manoeuvring the canoes tho. much laughter!!
Stopped off and had a picnic of Publix Roast Beef Subs (yes dad, roast beef subs! om nom nom!!)
Then we had to make our way upstream and back to the starting point!

Stopped off at Jupiter Blowing Rocks.Lots of photos and posing in ridiculous positions ;)

On our way home we stopped for a burger and a milkshake at “Steak ‘n Shake” and had the most delicious shakes and burgers… Mmmmmm!

Then, at the last minute, Fred said his daughter was part of the marching band at his kids’ school for a football match – would we like to go…? HELL YEAH! So, off we went to watch The Cobras high school football :) was pretty cool – Peter really enjoyed it!! I enjoyed the marching band stuff – was really good!!

Got back home and had an early night – all that canoeing REALLY tired us out!!

The weather is great – not as hot as i thought it would be. It’s probably about 30 degrees celcius or so. We’re having an awesome time!!
Today we are off to Walmart… and tomorrow morning we are off to The Keys for a few days – really looking forward to that!

We’ve arrived!

after a long long trip (of about 25 hours) we are here… in florida :)
still feels a bit surreal. will blog properly when we are rested and settled!

it’s not too hot – probably about the same temp as JHB when we left. It is rather windy tho.
Flights were fine – quite uneventful. Transer in london was quick and painless.

:)

Flying

Well, one week to go :)

Our flight leaves on Tuesday evening… so that’s basically one week and 9 hours :D

I was lying in bed last night thinking about the impending holiday, I’m really excited about a whole bunch of things :) but amidst the excitement, I forgot about how we are actually going to get there!!

I HATE flying. I’m really scared. Maybe because of watching so much “LOST“. I hate the smell of planes. I hate being all squished. I hate the bathrooms. I hate having to climb over people to go to the loo. Or having people climb over me. I hate take-off and I hate landing. Turbulence scares the sh*t out of me!

I was thinking about all this stuff last night while the wind was howling outside, and i started having a mild panic attack!

Really not looking forward to all those many hours in the air.

But once we on the ground in sunny Florida, it’ll be worth it, right?

Money, Money Money!

In 2 weeks we will be there!!

Yesterday, Peter got our Forex :) We have some actual money (Dollars and Pounds – pounds for our return – we spend 8 hours in Heathrow! Omg – it’s gonna be so boring), and we opted for a Cash Passport, loaded with dollars.

The other day, Philly_Girl asked me why we don’t just use a credit card while we over there… well, firstly, I don’t have a CC ;) and secondly, if we use Peter’s card, there is some crazy transaction fee every time we use it! Whereas, on a cash passport, there is no charge when you swipe the card (and a small fee for drawing money at an ATM).

Anyway – so, now we have:

almost time!! :D

Disneyworld Accommodation

In about 5 weeks time, we will be in Disneyworld! HOORAY!!
this past weekend we booked our accommodation. We’ll be staying at a place called Grand Palms in Orlando. It’s pretty much 10 minutes from all the places we are going while we are in Orlando. It’s a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom townhouse, with kitchen, washer/dryer, dishwasher and wi-fi! Sounds like home!!
There’s also a pool and tennis. Oh, and a screened porch for relaxing in the evenings!

So, that is all booked and paid for. Yay!!

Orlando, here we come!

Medieval Times

OMG! Peter found this place while checking out tourisrty things to do in Florida – and showed it to me, and i just HAD to go!!!

It’s called Medieval Times … 6 knights dressed in Medieval gear clash in a jousting tournament! On horseback!

Dinner is also included. Wow, it looks like SUCH FUN! I am really excited for this!

I was reading on their site about their horses

We raise nearly all of our more than 400 horses at Medieval Times’ Chapel Creek Ranch in Sanger, Texas.
Training begins early. As weanlings, Medieval Times horses are introduced to lead ropes and halters. Saddles come at age 2. Long reins and simple exercises such as lunging follow. At age 3, the horses move to their new homes — one of our nine North American Castles — where they learn advanced-level dressage from a master horse trainer. Then life as a pampered performer begins.

So excited to see these horses, especially now that I am back in the saddle and learning a TON! It’s gonna be so interesting to watch!!

You can also read about the knights in the show as well as their weapons.

Sounds like a really fun night out, and something pretty different! Can’t wait for this one!!
